The Betrayal An Amazing Documentary by Ellen Kuras, ASC

August 6, 2008
The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), a documentary produced and directed by Ellen Kuras, ASC, has been selected for the International Documentary Association Showcase. The Showcase is designed to qualify deserving documentaries for Oscar consideration. There will be two daily screenings at the Village East Cinema and at the IFC Center in New York City from August 8-14 and at the ArcLight Hollywood and the ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinemas in Los Angeles from August 22-28.

Kuras began working on this documentary during the dawn of her career in 1983. It began when she met a young political refugee from Laos whose family was split asunder by the war in Vietnam. Kuras culled the 96-minute film out of some 150 hours of interviews with members of the family at locations ranging from Brooklyn, New York to their homeland in Laos.

“My belief in what this film has to say is what kept me going for all of those years,” she says. “In many ways, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) is a mirror image of what is happening in our world today. It is a universal message and intimate view of the long-term effects of war on innocent victims.”
