Fletcher Camera & Lenses and Gene Siskel Film Center Host Chicago Premiere of No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos.

February 4, 2009

Fletcher Camera & Lenses invites you to an intimate, private screening of director and producer James Chressanthis, ASC’s award-winning documentary, No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos on February 7, 2009, at the Gene Siskel Film Center.   The evening will be hosted by WGN movie critic Nick Digillo.

The feature documentary produced by NC Motion Pictures, which debuted as an official selection of the Cannes Classics program at the 61st Annual Cannes International Film Festival in May of 2008, tracks the remarkable 50-year journey, artistry and triumph of the great cinematographers Laszlo Kovacs, ASC and Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC.  With film school equipment, they shot the Soviet crackdown of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Beginning with their arrival in the United States as political refugees from Hungary in February 1957 they struggle in Hollywood, finally breaking into the mainstream with their pivotal contribution to the "American New Wave.” with films like Easy Rider, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Five Easy Pieces, Paper Moon, Scarecrow, Deliverance, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Deer Hunter.

This event is a three-part series featuring both the director of the documentary, James Chressanthis, ASC, a two-time Emmy Nominee, as well as Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC himself.   The first event, “A Celebration of Cinematography”, will begin at 11:00 am and will showcase scenes from the cinematographers’ bodies of works.  The second gathering, which kicks off at 7:30 pm, will be the non-commercial Chicago Premiere of No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos and provide attendees with the opportunity for a Question and Answer session with James, Vilmos and possible other distinguished guests.  The Final session, a Master Cinematography Lighting Workshop, will feature Vilmos continuing his dedication to education that he and Laszlo have so tirelessly done over the years.  The event will be held at the Essanay Studios on Sunday.

“Fletcher is thrilled to be spearheading this event,” says Tom Fletcher of Fletcher Camera & Lenses,  “I’m a big admirer of both James and Vilmos, and feel honored to have been able to bring both this documentary and these two incredible cinematographers to Chicago with the help of the entire film community.”

No Subtitles Necessary was also produced by filmmakers Kian Soleimanpour and Zachary Kranzler of NC Motion Pictures and Tony Frere.   Other essential members of the production team and crew include Executive Producers Jimmy Conroy and Dr. David Kaminsky, Co-Executive Producer Art Monterastelli, Editor and Co-Producer Elisa Bonora and Cinematographer Anka Malatynska.   For more information about the documentary, cast and crew, please visit
