“Behind the Motion-Picture Canvas” at AMPAS

ASC associate Rob Hummel will present “Behind the Motion-Picture Canvas,” an illustrated lecture tracing the history of motion-picture formats from the silent era through the 21st century, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, on Sept. 9 at 8 p.m.

The program will include clips from The Great Train Robbery, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Lady and the Tramp, The Sound of Music and Silverado, among other films.

The special focus on film formats will continue Sept. 10-11 with screenings of new prints of Manhattan, shot by Gordon Willis, ASC, and The Black Stallion, shot by Caleb Deschanel, ASC. Hummel will introduce both screenings. Participating filmmakers will be announced closer to the event.
