And coming in November: the DVD of Cinematographer Style, available exclusively from the ASC Bookstore.
Over three years in production, Cinematographer Style is about technique and technology, art and style. Featuring 110 leading international cinematographers from 15 countries, the film explores how and why movies look the way they do. the film was shot at the ASC Clubhouse, Culver Studios, Paramount, Universal, Leavesden UK Studios and many other locations.
“In a word, FANTASTIC. Anyone interested in the genesis of creativity in all forms will find those passions resonating in this film,” says Daryn Okada, ASC, President of the American Society of Cinematographers.
This is a must-see film for writers, directors, producers, actors and others who collaborate with cinematographers, and also for journalists and film buffs. “This film will do for Cinematography what Blow-Up did for still photography,” writes film editor Jim Ruxin.
The film pursues common themes and threads, and became a dialog among colleagues, and was very relaxed, very engaging. The film has progression; it tells a story: “how cinematographers started, how style evolves, technique and technology, and where we’re going.”
From the beginning, the idea of cutting away to clips was resisted. “Cinematographers are great storytellers and actors,” says the film’s editor Matthew Blute. This was their chance to be in front of the camera. The common bond was passion for creating images that tell a story.
Cinematographer Style will also be a historic record, so plans are underway for careful, archival preservation. The sponsors are ARRI, Kodak and Technicolor. Digital Intermediate finishing services were donated by Goldcrest Post Productions. Additional support came from Clairmont Camera, Illumination Dynamics, Joe Dunton JDC, Arri/CSC, Fisher Dollies, Avid Technology, Facilis Technology, Taylor and Taylor Insurance, Quixote Expendables and cooperation of a vast number of enthusiastic and dedicated people.
Despite the best efforts to include as many cinematographers as possible, conflicts in schedules and the random nature of this business prevented interviewing everyone who should be in this film. Perhaps this calls for a sequel to Cinematographer Style.
The DVD will be available from The ASC Store or call 323-969-4333 or 800-448-0145. NTSC only. PAL version and Book coming soon. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the ASC Education Fund.
