well normally a critic (or an intellectual; be a philosopher like umberto eco, or a film lover) would not have enough technical knowledge to distinguish the immense input a cinematographer has on a movie; specially an important the work of both Othello martelli and gregg toland as been overlooked by the talent (and the lack of public awareness) of the director they happens to be associate with. the names of john ford; William wyler; and of course Mr Kane...er Welles happens to work as a touch of evil for the just retribution to Mr toland artistic input and achievement. something akin happens to Mr martelli a frequent collaborator of Fellini, and Mr rossellini and collaboration that's proven to be much much bitter than the rice.
