Demos: “You have to have some way to map the three colors like red, green and blue, into a spectrum, and the CIE 1931 two-degree Standard Colorimetric Observer is a way of doing that. But it’s not the only way. There also is a CIE 1964 10-degree Supplementary Standard Colorimetric Observer.

“We invited one of the spectral radiometer manufacturers, Photo Research to present to us and tell how they calibrate their instruments, how they work. We studied the instrument itself so we can understand how accurate and precise a measurement of the radiometric spectrum it provides. If we use a particular instrument, what accuracy should we expect? How much accuracy is it providing? That’s been ongoing. If you take multiple meters, all of which are supposedly calibrated, you find that there are slight differences in the measurements. We are using multiple meters and are starting to use multiple brands of meters as well to learn more about this and see how consistent they are.”

Reisner: “Our goals encompass both basic scientific understanding and helping the industry produce better results more consistently and more effectively. But the ultimate goal of any of this — helping people understand and deal correctly with linear and logarithmic representations, or understanding the characteristics of the CIE trichromatic systems and how they affect our image processing — is to enable movie makers to give audiences the intended experience. That’s always the ultimate goal.”
