The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference, held annually in Las Vegas, Nev., attracts more than 90,000 media and entertainment professionals from more than 150 countries.

AJA will showcase its line of high-quality and cost-effective digital-video interface, conversion, acquisition and desktop solutions that support the professional production and postproduction markets. The highlights will include the recent version 3.0 firmware update for the company’s Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini 10-bit 4:2:2 flash-disk recorders.

Anton/Bauer, a provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems, will debut its QRC-CA940 Gold Mount solution for the Canon EOS C300 digital cinema camera. The QRC-CA940 provides 7.2-volt power to the camera via a DC connector and 14.4-volt power on three PowerTap connectors.

Among the camera, lighting, and scanning and DI solutions highlighted in the Arri booth will be the Alexa Plus and Alexa M digital camera systems, and Arri LED lighting fixtures. Additionally, the Arri booth will feature a promo for the Alexa M that was shot by Bill Bennett, ASC. The promo features the first aerial footage captured with the camera system. Bennett worked with Pictorvision to create a variety of aerial-shooting opportunities, flying the camera — mounted on Pictorvision’s Eclipse system — around various Los Angeles-area landmarks.

Assimilate will reveal a host of significant advances to Scratch and Scratch Lab, the company’s high-performance tools for on-set/visual-effects dailies and digital-cinema finishing for 2K, 4K and Stereo 3-D. 

Autodesk will spotlight the recently announced 2013 versions of the company’s Digital Entertainment Creation software and suites, including Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage, MotionBuilder, Mudbox and Flame Premium. The new releases improve consistency and interoperability between applications, making it even easier for artists to take advantage of powerful, new and enhanced creative features.

BHV Broadcast, a manufacturer of compact, cost-effective equipment for live production and postproduction, will show an upgraded version of its award-winning Video Ghost phantom power system. Developed as a low-cost, reliable alternative to traditional batteries, Video Ghost now provides a hefty 60 watts of power at 12 volts. Equally at home with SD or HD signals, it can be used to power composite-to-SDI converters at the camera, avoiding significant signal degradation.

Blackmagic Design will showcase its range of high-quality video-editing products, color correctors, video converters, video-monitoring solutions, routers, live-production switchers, disk recorder, waveform monitors and film-restoration software.

Boxx will introduce the Meridian Lite, an entry-level RF HD camera system with zero-delay transmission. Meridian Lite is also upgradable to Boxx TV’s full-featured high-end Meridian wireless RF HD camera system. Boxx will also introduce the Meridian Tallis, an iris-control and tally-indicator accessory that provides tally and iris-only control for use on a wireless rig or Steadicam.

Cache-A, a leading supplier of network-attached archive appliances for the media and entertainment industry, will showcase its high-performance Power-Cache Archive Server, which includes the company’s latest version 2.1 software release with a range of new features. Cache-A’s archive appliances can easily archive source masters for production or entire projects for postproduction using the secure, portable, interchangeable, industry-standard LTFS or tar format on LTO-5 media.

Camera Corps, a specialist in high-volume support services for reality television programs as well as large-scale sports and stage events, will introduce its award-winning Q-Ball Pre-Set compact remote-controlled pan/tilt/zoom HD/SD camera to the U.S. market. Q-Ball Pre-Set allows 18 shot settings (each comprising pan angle, tilt angle, zoom and focus) to be stored prior to a live or real-time recorded shoot. Camera Corps will also introduce the BC550 compact 3G-capable fiber-optic link.

Canon will display its wide range of imaging solutions, including its popular lenses and camera systems. Highlights will include the recently introduced Cinema EOS C300 digital motion-picture camera, as well as the highly anticipated EOS 5D Mark III DSLR.

Carl Zeiss will showcase the new Distagon T* 2.8/15 super-wide-angle lens, which boasts an extra-large 100-degree angle of view and will be available with an EF (ZE) or F bayonet (ZF.2) mount. The lens incorporates two aspheric elements and special types of glass material with abnormal partial dispersion to provide extraordinary chromatic-aberration correction.

Cel-Soft will launch version 2.00 of its award-winning Cel-Scope 3D stereoscopic analyzer. In version 2.00, displays can be scaled and arranged as six or eight windows on one or two PC monitors, and optionally on a 3-D monitor. Left and right channels can be viewed simultaneously together with depth dynamics. Each display window can be set to show waveform, vectorscope and histogram graphics as well as differences in video parameters between each channel.

Cinedeck, a developer of mobile capture systems for motion picture and broadcast production, will spotlight the latest advances in its range of high-performance, multi-format, multi-channel recording, monitoring and playback systems. The company will showcase the latest versions of the Cinedeck EX — its portable, multi-format, multi-codec HD-SDI recording system — plus the Cinedeck RX, the new, rack-mountable, multi-channel solid-state recording, monitoring and playback system.

Cintel will launch a new 6K imaging sensor for the company’s Ditto Evolution 16mm and 35mm film scanner. The Ditto Evolution with 6K imaging sensor provides over-sampled 4K data files as well as new timeline interface options and extended vertical range option for the ImageMill2 real-time data-processing engine.

Codex will demonstrate Vault, which simplifies on-set and near-set workflows and provides commonality in workflows between different cameras. Vault is a modular, rugged solution for dailies production, review and archiving.

Convergent Design will showcase its NanoFlash and Nano3D digital video recorders and playback solutions for tapeless workflows. Additionally, the company will spotlight the latest firmware update for its popular Gemini 4:4:4 high-definition video recorder; features of the new firmware include two channels of embedded HD-SDI Audio, greatly enhanced playback control, slate metadata, triggering on incrementing time code, LTC time code input via the remote-control connector, compatibility with CineFlex cameras, LCD screen flip and brightness control.

Cooke will demonstrate its three families of lenses, 5/i, S4/i and Panchro. Each Cooke lens is handcrafted using a combination of state-of-the-art technology, traditional techniques and personal dexterity. The quality, reputation and look of Cooke lenses, together with the lower price point and smaller size, have been attracting producers of everything from television dramas and documentaries to Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning features. 

Dazmo Batteries will showcase its Z-Series C-LiFePo4 Intelligent Battery Pack, which has been specially designed for rental houses and broadcasters. The high-performance Z-Series batteries deliver an impressive 1,000 charge/recharge cycles, an extra-fast recharge time and the ability to maintain strong power output to the end of the charge.

DFT, a provider of high-end film and digital postproduction solutions, will demonstrate a set of enhanced features for the Scanity 4K/2K film scanner. The new features include enhancements in the vertical over-scanning function, audio scanning with user-adjustable optical heads, faster film winding, improved dirt detection and concealment algorithms, and native SD/HD file output support.

Dolby will showcase the Dolby Professional Reference Monitor, which fills the gap left by CRTs, delivering true blacks, exceptional dark detail, high contrast, wide dynamic range and precise color rendering. 

Easyfocus will showcase the Easyfocus distance-measurement tool, which combines an extremely precise distance reader with a touch-screen monitor interface. The system’s software has recently been upgraded, so that the Map Scan mode features improved usability for visual-effects work. The system is also now compatible with Preston Cinema Systems’ lens controls.

EditShare, a leader in shared media storage and end-to-end tapeless workflow solutions, will showcase its entire product lineup and highlight advancements in storage performance, seamless file migration across storage tiers, enhanced file and metadata management and new enterprise capabilities, including distributed processing for large-scale file ingest and proxy rendering, and system-wide workflow monitoring from ingest to archive.

FilmLight will demonstrate how its products facilitate every step in the production process, from the set to the screen. It will showcase Baselight, Baselight Portable and Baselight plug-ins, which are used to set looks in preproduction, apply grades and create dailies on or near set, and apply final grading and DI finishing in real-time 4K (including 3-D).

Fujifilm Optical Devices will introduce a cost-effective ENG-style lens with a 2x extender and show two breakthrough lenses for the first time in the U.S. The XA20xs8.5BERM is the latest addition to the 2/3” Exceed ENG lens series; the HA19x7.4BERM/BERD 2/3” ENG/EFP lens is the latest addition to the Premier Series of high-performance production lenses; and the XA19x7.4BESM-D8 is a compact, box-style studio and field lens. The company will also showcase a variety of its other high-end optics during the show.

Hitachi will introduce the SK-HD1500 slow-motion HD camera to the U.S. market. The camera is capable of capturing 2.5x and 3x the speed of standard-frame-rate cameras. The company will also introduce the HV-HD33 — a compact, multi-standard POV HD camera with 3-MOS sensor — and the super-small, self-contained, signal-sensor KP-HD20A HD camera. Hitachi will also showcase several recently introduced multi-format cameras.

The Hollywood Post Alliance will present a series of instructional sessions in the NAB Show Post Pit, located in the South Hall. Featuring the winners of the 6th Annual HPA Award for Engineering Excellence, the HPA Award for Creativity & Innovation in Post as well as the Best of the Tech Retreat Demos, the Post Pit sessions will take the struggle out of understanding today’s workflows and tools, and give attendees a fighting chance to truly understand the latest, most important and innovative trends in postproduction.

I-Movix, a specialist in extreme slow motion (150-10,000 fps), will showcase the X10 system, which delivers real-time, continuous, extreme slow motion in Full HD at 300 fps (or 600 fps in 720p). The company will also spotlight the new SprintCam Vvs HD 1.2 software release, which features refined and enhanced functionality inspired by feedback from the global community of SprintCam users.

Image Matters is a designer and manufacturer of JPEG 2000 solutions. The company will showcase its line of JPEG 2000 acceleration boards, which are being used by developers, OEM manufacturers and system integrators to develop new JPEG 2000 applications for digital cinema, broadcast, production, postproduction, satellite imaging and more.

Imagineer Systems will launch the newest versions of Mocha Pro and Mocha AE. All Mocha v3 products have been updated to add new features and improve core areas for customers, from large facilities that require advanced layer management tools for film effects and roto pipelines to creative boutiques and artists who need true 3-D camera support. Imagineer has also streamlined its product family and simplified its pricing strategy to ensure the company’s intelligent Planar Tracking utilities are that much more accessible for postproduction and visual-effects professionals.

Litepanels will debut a variety of new LED lighting products, including the Inca Series of tungsten-balanced Fresnel fixtures and the daylight-balanced Hilio fixture, as well as the Croma (variable color temperature) and Luma (daylight-balanced) on-camera units. Additionally, the company will spotlight its Sola 4 and Sola 6 daylight-balanced Fresnel fixtures.

MSE will unveil its new Motion Control System, which was specially designed to work with Floatcam’s DC-Slider variable-angled camera platform. The Motion Control System allows for manual and programmed movements that can be recorded and stored for later use. Each movement can be repeated up to 999 times. Only one motor is required for all functions of the motor control, and the system features a wide range of speed settings.

MTI Film will show Cortex:Convey and Cortex:Capture, the first products in MTI’s next generation of tools that provide an efficient, easy-to-use and coherent environment for data-centric postproduction workflows. Cortex:Convey is a powerful transcoding engine that supports all popular inputs and outputs to facilitate the creation of file-based deliverables. Cortex:Capture is a DIT’s best friend, with features for ingesting, verifying, transcoding, automatic audio-image sync, and setting and exporting looks on set.

OConnor will display its range of camera supports and accessories. Highlights will include the O-Focus Dual Mini, a compact, double-sided follow-focus unit for still and cine-style lenses; the Ultimate 1030D and 1030Ds fluid heads, which are ideal for full-format sensor, lighter-weight cameras; the 30L carbon fiber tripod, which combines new-age materials with precision engineering to create a lightweight, solid and stable support system; and the Universal Camera Baseplate, which is designed to adapt small to medium digital-cinema cameras to the thousands of standard accessories available in the professional marketplace.

P+S Technik will introduce the X-Over Workflow for the HS-2 and PS-Cam X35 cameras. The X-Over Workflow is based on the use of multiple recorders and formats to fit established workflows from the set through postproduction. The company will also unveil the PS-Micro Rig, a versatile, ultra-compact 3-D mirror rig. The PS-Micro Rig is compatible with micro cameras such as the SI-2K and SinaCam, and it can be handheld or mounted to a crane, tripod or Steadicam.

Panasonic will showcase its range of professional video, display and projection systems, including 3-D solutions, solid-state camcorders and recorders, studio and POV cameras, plasma displays and production monitors. Highlights will include the company’s popular AG-AF100 4/3”-sensor AVCCam camcorder and the recently introduced HDC-Z10000 twin-lens 2-D/3-D AVCHD camcorder.

Petrol will introduce the Deca Audio Bag, an ultra-lightweight bag designed to securely transport sound equipment. The company will also spotlight the Liteporter, which protects Litepanels 1x1 LED fixtures for transport; the Rolling DigiSuite DSLR Camera Case, a carry-on size roll-away carrier; and Deca LCD Monitor Bags.

Sachtler will introduce the new Ace tripod system. Compact, durable and made of a unique, lightweight composite material, Ace is an optimal support for the video and DSLR market. Sachtler will also present such camera supports as the Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1 ENG/EFP fluid heads and the Artemis Cine HD Pro modular camera stabilizer system.

Shotoku, a leading provider of manual and robotic camera support and virtual-reality tracking, will present its new SG900 pan-and-tilt head, developed for applications requiring teleprompters. The company will also showcase the TP200 two-stage pneumatic pedestal and the SP tripod series.

Singular Software, a developer of workflow automation applications for video production, will showcase its PluralEyes, Presto and DualEyes synchronization applications. PluralEyes dramatically accelerates the workflow for multi-camera, multi-take and dual-system audio production by synchronizing audio and video clips automatically, without the need for time code, clappers or other special preparation. DualEyes provides the same core automation and sync capabilities in a stand-alone application. Presto incorporates sophisticated visual tracking and image-matching technology to simplify the entire editing process for creating presentation videos.

Sonnet Technologies, a provider of storage systems and media readers for professional users in the film, video and broadcast industries, will showcase its latest innovations in direct attached and shared storage. Highlights include the Xmac Mini Server 1U Rackmount PCIe 2.0 Expansion System with Thunderbolt Ports, the Echo Express PCIe 2.0 Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis, the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter, the Qio CF4 Professional CompactFlash Media Reader, the Qio E3 Professional SxS Media Reader, the Qio MR (now PC-compatible) and the Fusion RX1600 Vfibre Video Editing SAN Server.

Sony will display a range of high-definition products and technologies for 2-D, 3-D and 4K production, ranging from camcorders and cameras to switchers and displays. Highlights will include the F65 CineAlta digital motion-picture camera with 8K image sensor; the full line of Super 35mm professional camcorders, including the PMW-F3 and the NXCam line; the full line of professional production monitors, including the company’s OLED professional master monitoring technology; and the PMW-TD300 and HXR-NX3D1U professional 3-D camcorders.

Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, will announce new functionality for its popular Pix 240 portable audio/video recorder, along with several other advancements to its product line. The Pix 240 features HDMI and HD-SDI connectors and records QuickTime files to CompactFlash cards or removable, 2.5” solid-state hard drives.

Telemetrics will spotlight the Elevating Wall Mount, which opens new dimensions in studio camera-positioning-system capabilities by offering vertical and horizontal camera movement along with pan-and-tilt functionality. The heavy-duty belt-driven track system, which boasts position, preset and motion-control capability, is controllable through various Telemetrics control panels and computer software. Track lengths and configurations can be tailored to the user’s specific needs, and the system can be mounted on the wall, ceiling or floor. 

TS3Cine will offer attendees a close look at the TS3Cine high-speed digital camera, which records ultra-sharp 1280x1024-resolution images at 500 fps, 720p images at 720 fps and, at reduced resolutions, up to 20,000 fps. The TS3Cine high-speed camera is designed and manufactured by Fastec Imaging and distributed by Rule Boston Camera. 

TVLogic will showcase its 2012 monitor line, including seven new models. The new monitors range from 17” to 47” and are aimed for broadcast, production and postproduction applications.

Viewz will showcase its line of top quality, technologically advanced reference display monitors for postproduction and broadcast applications. The lineup includes 3G-SDI, ultra-light and portable viewfinders; cutting-edge, lightweight 3G-SDI LED field monitors with HDMI-to-SDI active loop-through; 3G-HDI and HD-SDI production monitors; and 9-channel 3G-HDI LED multi-viewer production monitors.

Vinten will launch the Vision Blue5 pan-and-tilt head and tripod system, which provides a cost-effective solution to support the larger cameras used by professional videographers. The company will also showcase its range of camera-support systems, including Vision Blue, Vision AS, Vision 100 and 250, Vector and a wide selection of studio and OB pedestals, tripods and accessories.

Vinten Radamec, a leading provider of robotic camera support systems, will introduce the FH-145 and FHR-145 pan-and-tilt heads, which incorporate the Intelligent Control Engineering (ICE) platform. ICE delivers better control and accuracy in a highly compact form to give broadcasters the ultimate smooth image in both virtual and real worlds. The company will also launch a Virtual Reality upgrade for the FHR-35 head.

Weisscam will launch the Soha technology platform, which offers total scalability through its unique flexibility. Going forward, every Weisscam T-Cam will be equipped with Soha hardware, which features an interchangeable sensor board (for 2/3”, Super 16 and Super 35 format), a high-performance interface for industry-standard recorders, uncompressed raw and HD output, and modular software architecture. The company will also introduce the T-Plug connector, a compact breakout connector that provides a high-performance interface to the T-Cam for raw and HD video formats, camera commands and power.

Zacuto will display its wide range of high-quality camera accessories, which are designed, manufactured and assembled in the United States. Highlights will include the popular Z-Finder and Z-Finder EVF, as well as the recently introduced Scorpion DSLR shoulder support.
