The show is a main stage for the 1,500-plus exhibiting companies to showcase technological advancements that impact a variety of audio-visual workflows through every phase of production, from prep through post. AC will be on hand during the run of the show, April 16-19, to look at a host of new releases as they take their place in the spotlight. (Come say hello at the American Cinematographer booth, C 11248.) Before the Convention Center’s doors even open, here’s a snapshot of what to look forward to. In addition to the main show floor, the NAB Show also offers a series of illuminating, educational sessions. The Brave New World of Filmmaking with Digital Technologies, Produced in Partnership with AMPAS
New digital techniques are transforming the art and craft of filmmaking, opening doors to new forms of storytelling, upending historical ways of doing things and altering how department heads collaborate. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Cinematographers, Art Directors and Visual Effects Branches will look at the benefits and challenges of creating motion pictures with new digital technologies. The collaboration between the cinematographer and the main creative force on a movie or TV series determines the look and emotional textures of every image on-screen, but how they work together varies with the project and its workflows. Two noteworthy teams — including the filmmakers from The Vampire Diaries — will discuss how they realized the visual style of high-stakes projects, from conception through postproduction. On-set Workflows for Features and Television
With “postproduction” increasingly moving on set, shooting digitally requires designing a workflow and selecting a color-management system that is appropriate for the project. A panel of filmmakers will examine four feature and television projects and their respective workflows, with a particular focus on Sony’s F65 using IIF-ACES, the Arri Alexa’s look-management system, repeatable looks, on- and near-set dailies and more.
