Fujifilm Manages Color with IS-Mini

Fujifilm North America Corp. has introduced the IS-Mini color-management tool. The IS-Mini is a small hardware device that takes an incoming HD-SDI video signal from a digital camera and converts the color information via two sets of 1-D LUTs and 3-D LUTs to outputs of both HD-SDI and HDMI connections — all in record time while delivering high-quality imaging.

The IS-Mini is an extension of the technologies first introduced through Fujifilm’s CCBox Image Processing System IS-100, and is designed to work with the CCBox by extending its abilities to accurately profile production monitors and provide remote color adjustment of live digital images during movie and television productions. Together, the CCBox and IS-Mini form a powerful on-set color-management system.

The IS-Mini can also operate independently of the CCBox to create and apply calibrations to almost any kind of production monitor. A built-in Ethernet connection allows multiple IS-Mini units to be assembled into an array for multi-monitor/multi-camera image control and precise color matching.

Blackmagic Updates Resolve, Integrates Fraunhofers EasyDCP

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 10, a major upgrade that includes new features for integrating the workflows of varied software products used throughout the film and television industry.

DaVinci Resolve 10 allows timelines to be moved into and out of DaVinci Resolve and other editing software such as Final Cut Pro, Avid and Premiere Pro. It also boasts upgraded on-set tools, added support for OpenFX plug-ins and added tools for delivering final project masters to cinemas. A Resolve Live feature allows live color grading direct from the video input with full creative power such as primaries, secondaries, power windows, custom curves and more. Grades can be stored and then relinked when the camera files are loaded.

DaVinci Resolve 10 also includes enhanced editing features and allows online finishing of edits performed in other popular editing software. Features include full multi-track editing with 16 channels of audio per clip and unlimited video and audio tracks in the timeline, as well as extensive ripple, roll, slide and slip-clip trimming support and a powerful title tool with static, lower third, scroll and crawl titles with multiple fonts, sizes, drop shadow and XY positioning.

“One thing I have found extremely frustrating over the last few years is the incompatibility between software tools for video,” says Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design. “I think it makes life very hard for people working in postproduction, where multiple people are working on different parts of the job and using all kinds of different software tools. With DaVinci Resolve 10 we have worked hard to help all these tools work together, depending on what the customer wants to do. This is what customers actually need and we think they will love all the work we have done to help make this high-end workflow simple and easy.”

Blackmagic has also paired with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits — part of the Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance — to incorporate Fraunhofer IIS’ EasyDCP software into the DaVinci Resolve 10. Thanks to the key delivery message generator of the Fraunhofer software, even sensitive data for dailies can be created and encrypted so they can be activated for specific players and for predetermined play-out periods.

“The integration of our EasyDCP software allows DaVinci Resolve 10 to use DCPs as the direct input format for postproduction and as an alternative exchange format with the highest image quality,” says Heiko Sparenberg, group manager for digital cinema at Fraunhofer IIS.

DaVinci Resolve 10 is available through Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide and is a free upgrade for existing DaVinci Resolve customers.

Red Giant Makes Footage BulletProof

Red Giant has introduced BulletProof, a complete offload, prep and delivery solution for footage that simplifies on-set tasks. Bridging the gap between camera and editor, BulletProof combines backup, organization, color and delivery tasks while handling footage from multiple cameras and media cards.

Whether shooting with a Canon DSLR, Nikon DSLR or GoPro sports cam, filmmakers, videographers and data wranglers can quickly and easily transform their captured media into edit-ready footage. BulletProof eliminates the need to manually copy media cards to hard drives by including a reliable, checksum-verified process for backing up valuable footage. BulletProof specializes in DSLR and sports-cam workflows and provides professional color controls.

“My product designs emerge from my own needs as a filmmaker,” says Stu Maschwitz, one of the co-designers of BulletProof. “Every time I return from a shoot, I’m faced with the same dilemma: how to manage all my footage. And I face the same burning questions: Will my shots look as good on the screen as they did in my viewfinder? Will it cut? How do I get it to my editor looking the way I want? BulletProof allows me to back up safely as I shoot, check my shots and start the color-correction process right there on the set, and then communicate important information to my editor — all without taking my cinematography hat off.”

The BulletProof workflow is presented in a series of five views (import, organize, review, refine and export) arranged in a left-to-right flow that mirrors what filmmakers do on set every day. Users move between views with a sliding interface and finger-swipe support.

General Dynamics Upgrades Cineflex Elite With Data+

General Dynamics Global Imaging Technologies has introduced Data+, an elective upgrade to the Cineflex Elite stabilized camera system. Data+ layers system-specific metadata onto Super 35-format video, enabling advanced postproduction editing and allowing cinematographers to use the Cineflex Elite for productions that require the integration of computer-generated imagery.

Data+ helps streamline and simplify the post process by allowing directors to orient CGI objects to the camera’s perspective. This enhancement provides the operator with full situational awareness by layering system metadata, including the gimbal position (azimuth/elevation), lens focus, iris, zoom and time stamp, onto the Cineflex video display.

The Data+ upgrade records all metadata onto separate media to facilitate efficient transfer to editing systems. With all metadata recorded on a standard SD card, the production team can remove the card from the Cineflex Elite and readily utilize the Data+ synchronous metadata with the Cineflex-acquired video.

“The advanced capability of Data+ combined with the proven performance of Cineflex Elite represents the culmination of 10 years of Cineflex innovation and development,” says Bob McGill, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Global Imaging Technologies. “With computer-generated imagery playing a significant role in just about every feature film production today, Data+ allows cinematographers to bring the quality of Cineflex imagery to the big screen in an entirely new way.”

Data+ also provides Cineflex Elite systems with a network-enabled Ethernet interface for simplified wireless installation. This allows users to remotely control an aerial camera system from the ground. The Data+ interface also enables the synchronization of multiple Cineflex systems on a shared network, providing increased, coordinated coverage of a desired area.
