Red Giant Shines with Radium Glow

Red Giant Software has added the Radium Glow motion-graphics plug-in set to its growing line of professional digital-video products.

Unlike most glow filters that simply blur the source video, Radium Glow provides pinpoint control over the glow, with editable shapes that can generate precise outlines or create glimmering points. The advanced edge controls, built-in masking and output controls let the user mimic real-light behavior. The three plug-ins can also be used to add neon-shaped glows to text or be combined with Trapcode Particular or other plug-ins to create dazzling sparkle and shimmer effects.

Radium Glow's intelligent area-selection system makes the image glow where the source is the brightest. Bright parts of the subject glow larger, yielding natural-looking halos and sparkle that cannot be replicated with other glow effects.

The Radium Glow plug-in set includes advanced masking and intensity controls, Glow Lite for simple controls and quick application of glow effects, and Glow Edge for applying glows only around the edges of objects. Four quality levels and full 32-bit floating-point rendering let users find the right tradeoff between speed and detail. Additionally, Radium Glow uses shapes to generate a glow. Simple circles and star shapes are included, along with a library of 10 other shapes to enable sophisticated glow effects. In fact, any source image can be used as a shape, giving users powerful creative control.

Supporting numerous host applications, including After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Motion and Avid AVX, Radium Glow is available for $99.

True Blue Fixtures

Combining extensive research, feedback from lighting professionals and advances in technology, Arri has designed the True Blue series of six lamp heads for studio and location lighting.

Pressure die-cast and extruded-aluminum components have reduced the overall weight of the True Blue fixtures without any sacrifice in quality or durability, and many components offer greater strength and resistance to corrosion than Arri’s original line of lighting units. Arri’s cross-cooling system reduces lamp-housing temperature by 25 percent and lens temperature by 17 percent; with special air channels built into the aluminum extrusion, a constant stream of air passes around the Fresnel lens and into the lamp head, regardless of the tilt angle.

At the heart of the True Blue concept is a redesigned stirrup and improved tilt lock. The stainless-steel friction disc locks the lamp head securely, even with the largest Chimera. To make lamp-head balance even easier, the stirrup mounting slides and can be adjusted to counterbalance all accessories. The new extruded-aluminum stirrup is stronger, lighter and less bulky but still permits full fixture rotation, and its soft contour makes it comfortable to carry.

The new Stegmaier connector and strain relief rotate to allow the cable orientation to be quickly adjusted for hanging or stand mounting. Improved barn doors are stronger and less susceptible to bending, and a new hinge design maintains constant tension that can be easily adjusted.

Routine maintenance and repair are easier, with fast, simple access to all internal components, and cleaning is made effortless by smooth lamp-housing surfaces. True Blue Fresnels from 1,000-5,000 watts include the T1 (1K), T2 (2K), T5 (5K), ST1 (1K), ST2 (2K) and ST5 (5K).

Philips MasterColor Enhances Source Four HIDs

Electronic Theater Controls (ETC) has announced the availability of Source Four HID lighting fixtures with the Philips MasterColor 70-watt CDM lamp.

Source Four products — with the exception of ETC’s MultiPar strip light and Revolution moving light — can now be delivered in a 70-watt version with a 70-watt MasterColor lamp. The lamp offers the same benefits as the 150-watt MasterColor, including 3000ºK color temperature and 12,000-hour life, but in a more energy-efficient, low-wattage package. Additionally, a 4200ºK lamp is available. For fixtures already in the field, a ballast-assembly change is required to use the 70-watt lamp.

ETC’s Source Four and Source Four Par optical systems are well suited to this lamp. When equipped with a 150-watt HID lamp, the 26-degree Source Four HID Jr. outputs 4,575 lumens; the same fixture with the 70-watt lamp produces 2,800 lumens, meaning 65 percent of the output for only 45 percent of the watts.

LFXHub Generates Effects

Berlin-based Movie-Intercom LightingFX Tools has introduced the LFXHub, a lighting-effects generator combining preset lighting effects in one rugged box.

The LFXHub can store 12 preset “flicker” effects — such as “short circuit,” “torches,” “welding” and “broken fluorescent” — and each can be adapted to the individual user’s requirements. The unit works with software-based functions, and a remote software update feature makes it easy to install additional functions by simply connecting the LFXHub to a PC.

Giving lighting designers the flexibility to use the correct lamp for a given situation, the LFXHub can connect to an array of tungsten lighting equipment, dimmer shutters combined with HMIs, and analog and DMX dimmer packs. Direct control of Kino Flo’s ParaBeam, DivaLite and ParaZip fixtures also provide useful applications for TV and fire effects.

A “ramp” function adjusts the smoothness of a stored flicker curve to the power of the connected bulb, and every effect is reproducible, with each parameter displayed on the unit’s LCD screen. Furthermore, an exact exposure calibration is possible with the measurement function, which “freezes” the effect so upper and lower brightness limits can be precisely defined.

The LFXHub provides three output channels (DMX, 0-10 VDC and an internal dimmer pack with 3.6K output) and a control input for Movie-Intercom’s LightningFX trigger, remote dimmer or PowerSensor accessories.
