The February 2010 issue of American Cinematographer magazine includes a profile of this year’s recipient of the ASC International Award: Chris Menges, ASC, BSC.

The Wolfman (Universal)
Shelly Johnson, ASC will pen a comprehensive overview of his work on this stylish retelling of the classic horror tale, in which an American nobleman (Benicio Del Toro) returns to his ancestral home in Victorian-era Great Britain, where he is attacked by a rampaging werewolf and transformed into one of the savage beasts. Johnson’s account of the shoot will offer firsthand details about his approach to the film’s Gothic style and foreboding ambience.

Working With the Red Camera
Our latest survey of AC readers revealed significant interest in the subject of shooting with the Red One digital camera, so we asked cinematographer Christopher Probst, our technical editor, to tackle the subject. Over the past decade, Chris has written some of AC’s best-known how-to articles, and he has used the Red on more than 40 projects, including music videos for Chris Brown’s “Crawl,” Katy Perry’s “Waking Up in Vegas” and The Black Eyed Peas’ “I’ve Gotta Feeling.” He writes, “I’ve shot some of my favorite projects with the Red, and I’m extremely proud of the imagery I have created with it. But the Red, like every other camera, is not perfect. My goal is to discuss some of my experiences and detail some aspects of this particular learning curve.”

ASC International Award
British cinematographer Chris Menges, ASC, BSC will receive the ASC International Award at the 24th annual ASC Awards ceremony, to be held in Los Angeles on February 27, 2010. The International Award is one of the Society’s most prestigious honors, presented annually to an foreign-born cinematographer whose work reflects the highest standard of excellence. Menges’ long and varied list of credits certainly meets this criterium. His résumé boasts two Academy Awards (for The Mission and The Killing Fields), two other Academy nominations (for Michael Collins and The Reader), two BAFTA Awards, four other BAFTA nominations and four ASC Award nominations. His long list of credits also includes Local Hero, Comfort and Joy, The Boxer, The Pledge, Dirty Pretty Things, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, North Country and Notes on a Scandal.

Suspiria historical
Luciano Tovoli, ASC, AIC contributed stunning imagery to this 1970s horror classic helmed by visionary Italian director Dario Argento. Filled with memorable images of mayhem, the movie stars Jessica Harper as a new student at an elite European ballet academy who soon discovers that the school’s instructors are witches bent on sowing chaos and destruction. Tovoli will offer an in-depth analysis of the unique methods he employed to lend the picture its abundance of visual panache.

The February issue’s departments will also offer illuminating insights:

  • Short Takes will reveal the techniques used to create What’s in the Box?, a spectacular low-budget video that became an Internet sensation.
  • Production Slate will offer interviews with cinematographers Robbie Ryan about his work on the indie feature Fish Tank and Lisa Wiegand about her use of the Panasonic Varicam on the television series Dollhouse.
  • Post Focus will present an overview of the services offered by Offhollywood Digital in New York, including the facility’s support for Red-camera workflow.
  • ASC Close-Up will offer a profile of Society member Paul Cameron, whose cinematography credits include Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish, Man on Fire and Collateral.
