The November 2010 issue of American Cinematographer magazine has a special focus on holiday movies.
Dean Semler, ASC, ACS took the reins on this handsomely mounted period picture that tells the dramatic life story of strong-willed stable owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane), who gambled her family’s fortune by betting that her prize racehorse would win the Triple Crown. In a detailed Q&A, Semler discusses how he combined classic Hollywood cinematography with modern, cutting-edge techniques to lend the movie its dynamic look. He also focuses on the special tools he used to capture unique perspectives for the film’s exciting race footage.
Hereafter (Warner Bros.)
Tom Stern, ASC, AFC and director Clint Eastwood enjoyed their ninth feature collaboration on Hereafter, which tells the converging stories of three disparate people whose lives intersect in a quest for insight into the afterlife following a sequence of tragedies. Stern discusses his ever-evolving collaborative relationship with Eastwood and how they and their crew managed this globe-spanning shoot, which included location work in London, Paris and Maui.
Carlos (IFC Films)
Denis Lenoir, ASC, AFC and Yorick Le Saux shared duties behind the camera to bring the notorious life of the terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, a.k.a. Carlos the Jackal (Édgar Ramiréz), to the big screen for director Olivier Assayas. The two cinematographers detail their joint efforts on the 5 1/2–hour miniseries, which required seven months of production in numerous countries, including France, Austria, Lebanon and Morocco.
Tribute to William A. Fraker, ASC
One of the truly great and influential cinematographers of his generation, William A. Fraker, ASC, passed away on May 31, 2010. A five-time Academy Award nominee who also earned the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Fraker compiled an impressive list of credits that includes such memorable films as Rosemary’s Baby, Bullitt, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Heaven Can Wait, 1941, WarGames, Murphy’s Romance and Tombstone. In this tribute piece, AC honors Fraker’s legacy by presenting comments from some of his key collaborators, as well as a selection of vintage photographs.

- Short Takes details the work of filmmakers Zak Forrest and Chad Liebenguth on a Deftones music video that required them to shoot both underwater and during a tornado. Among other topics, the duo discuss their use of Red cameras equipped with the Mysterium-X sensor, underwater rigs, a new Litepanels prototype LED unit and special lens elements that incorporated modified vintage glass from a set of Zeiss Superspeeds.
- Production Slate presents an up-close look at Monsters, an impressive example of DIY moviemaking that was shot and directed by Gareth Edwards, who also crafted the horror thriller’s visual effects.
